Tutorials Thursday afternoons!
Welcome to Mr. Reed's U.S. History Class 2016-2017

Welcome to Mr. Reed's 8th grade United States History class!  We have a fun and exciting year planned for our students.  We will be using a variety of strategies in our class to help our students prepare for their STAAR History test in early May.

While our class is fun, it is also fast paced and will require hard work, dedication, and responsibility from the students.  Our motto this year for our curriculum is rigor and relevance. Students will be using a variety of sources to research information and draw their own conclusions often presenting these conclusions to their class.

Scope and Sequence

Semester 1:                                Semester 2:
Colonization                               Growth of a Nation
American Revolution                 Reformers
Constitution                                Sectionalism
New Republic                             Civil War
Early Republic                            Reconstruction
                                                   Review for STAAR

Grades will be posted once a week.  Grades will be calculated as follows – 50% test grades, 30% daily grades, 20% quizzes.  We have a lot of exciting parent communication tools this year for your convenience.

Each student will maintain a binder that will remain in the classroom. Everything we do in our class will be kept in this binder.  Notes will be taken in the binder and assignments will also be put in the binder.  The binder is completely maintained within the classroom.

Absences and Make-up Work:
Attendance is absolutely essential to students’ success in this class.  Students are ALWAYS allowed to make up work if they are absent. If a student is prone to frequent absences, it may be more convenient for a parent to come to the school and check out a text book for students to use at home.  This can be done through the front office of the school.  I will be available after school from 4:15 to 5:00 on Thursdays for tutorials.  Make up work will not be offered before or after school if a student did not complete an assignment in class due to off task behaviors such as sleeping or talking with class mates about something other than the assignment.  It is absolutely up to the student to make up missed assignments in a timely fashion.  A timely fashion would be by my next available session before or after school.  Students should make transportation arrangements prior to the tutorial not the day of.
